Solar for a 3 bedroom with 2 AC units: What should I really expect?
GThe power situation in our area has gone from bad to worse. Last week, we had about four hours of electricity in three days, and I had to keep buying fuel for the generator just to keep the fridge running and make life bearable. At the current fuel price, I spent almost N95K on fuel last month alone, and that is not sustainable. My wife and I have been discussing solar for over a year, but we kept postponing because the initial cost felt too high. Now I am seriously considering it, and we have set aside N3 million for the project. Our home is a 3 bedroom flat with two 1.5HP air conditioners, a refrigerator, and the usual light bulbs. I know the AC units are the big power consumers, and I am not sure if ₦3 million can cover batteries, panels, inverter, and installation for running both ACs for a few hours in the evening. I am also confused about the sizing and the technology choices: should I go for lithium batteries or tubular? How many panels would I need? And what about maintenance and lifespan? Some people say solar is a game changer, others say the batteries will need replacement in a few years and wipe out the savings. I am leaning towards getting a system that can run the fridge and lights throughout the night, and maybe one AC unit for about 5 to 6 hours in the evening, but I am open to suggestions.
